We're thrilled to announce the launch of a percussion instrument drive in partnership with Long & McQuade, aimed at bringing more rhythm, joy, and connection to seniors living in care homes across Canada.

Starting August 1st, 2025, participating BC Long & McQuade locations will begin accepting gently used percussion instrument donations — tambourines, shakers, maracas, bongos, hand drums, and more. These donations will go directly to BC not-for-profit care homes, enhancing music programming that brings comfort and community to older adults, many of whom face isolation and limited creative outlets.
"’The sounds bring back memories of our happy times,’" Mr. Z reflects. "His connection to the instrument goes beyond the notes - it’s a bridge to cherished moments and a way for him to relive a shared love of music,” says one care home staff member. “Playing the instrument gives them a welcome escape from the routine of daily life, allowing them to reconnect with their love of music and shared memories.”
Why Percussion?
Percussion instruments are intuitive, easy to use, and highly engaging, which makes them ideal for group workshops, one-on-one sessions, and live interactive events in care homes. Whether it’s tapping along to a classic tune or shaking a maraca during a sing-along, these instruments create meaningful moments that spark memories and smiles.
Building on a Legacy of Joy
This campaign builds on the success of Heart For Music, which has already reached over 250 care homes across Canada with personalized playlists, listening devices, and live music events. This next step brings even more hands-on music-making opportunities to residents.
“We’re grateful to partner with Long & McQuade on this meaningful campaign,” says Janae Sluys, Heart for Music Coordinator at Rick’s Heart Foundation. “We encourage our community members to check their closets and garages for instruments. Many not-for-profit Care Homes rely on funding from their communities in order to provide care for their residents, and every donation makes a difference.”
